Rosenberg

Rosenberg is an EPCIC contractor with its own yard located in Stavanger, on the west coast of Norway, that employs more than 3000 people with skill sets ranging from engineering to construction. They are currently on a digital transformation journey – and they are looking at potential ways to utilize their 3D assets in better ways. Traditionally they have experienced that access to 3D data often is limited to specialists utilizing costly software, which is something they wanted to change. Rosenberg has selected Novotech as a 3D visualization tool to enable 3D-models, engineering drawings, laser scans and all associated documents and data to be available to anyone – whether they are employees, customers or business partners – at any time on any device via a web portal, regardless of 3D formats and file sizes. By creating a Digital Twin, they will enable the visualisation of data often hidden inside design systems without the need for any specialist software, which in turn enables data to be measured for completeness and maturity when related to data handover.

Integrated with IFS (ERP system)

The Rosenberg IFS ERP system will store relevant documentation. This can be commercial information such as vendors, purchase orders or information of a technical nature (e.g. certificates, work permits, maintenance orders). Previously, information that they would benefit from looking at simultaneously, required them to go back and forth between different systems. Typically, this data was also restricted to office personnel, which could be very troublesome. For example, during an inspection or walk-about one might see something off that prompted further inquiry – such as status of a suspect-looking valve, and when it was last maintained. Before it was a cumbersome process, requiring Rosenberg employees to take a photo, download the photo to their laptop and then send it off to the engineering personnel to look into it. Other options were memory sticks or sending the photo to office emails. Rune Trengereid could easily see that they had to be more efficient to lower costs, but also to be more sustainable.

For example, by zooming in at a point of interest on an object found on the turret of the Jotun ship, all associated IFS documents and 3D models can be reviewed, right then and there. This can be at the Rosenberg office, customer site or on the Jotun ship, using any device that allows for a web browser.

Utilizing point cloud / Laser Scans

Laser scanning can accurately measure and collect data from objects, surfaces, and buildings. Laser scanners collect information in the form of point cloud data, which consists of millions of 3D, or XYZ, coordinates. Rosenberg wanted a way of comparing their point cloud data with their existing 3D models. Novorender allows their 3D data and point cloud to be analysed directly in the same view.

There are great benefits to being able to visualize during the design phase, rather than waiting until after equipment has been built. All measurements can be validated in the scan, limiting the occurrence of manual errors. Things are done correctly the first time around. The documentation is also permanent, thus serving as an aid to Rosenberg’s LCI obligations. Rosenberg has seen a huge benefit in comparing the 3d model and laser scan in one view, and thus have been able to realize cost savings, reduced risk, reduced waste, and reduced time.

Embedded into Microsoft Teams

Rosenberg has long been looking for ways to collaborate more efficiently across digital platforms. It has been one of the ways they have been more agile in embracing work-from-home-solutions during the pandemic by using communication tools such as Microsoft Teams. As Novorender easily can be embedded into most collaboration tools, this made them more efficient in working across groups and borders.
