Challenge
Skanska, one of the world’s top ten construction companies, is responsible for delivering some of the most complex infrastructure projects globally. In Norway, they are taking on Rogfast — the world’s longest and deepest undersea tunnel. The 27-kilometer tunnel runs as deep as 400 meters below sea level and represents a landmark achievement in road infrastructure and tunneling.
To manage the scale and complexity of Rogfast, the owner, Statens Vegvesen, divided the project into three parts. Skanska’s section will eventually connect with another contractor’s tunnel segment far below sea level — a task requiring very high precision, as the two ends must meet with only a few centimeters’ margin of error.
Handling such a project involves enormous amounts of data accumulated over decades. With multiple trades and a challenging geological environment, the key task lay in managing, visualizing, and utilizing this information effectively throughout all project phases.

Approach
To tackle these challenges, Skanska turned to Novorender, A Procore Company, and adopted its federated viewer and visualization platform. With Novorender, the team can compile and explore all project data in a single digital interface — from drilling plans and logs to detailed BIM models.
“Novorender enables us to visualize all the data in one platform. In this way, all the users across all trades can get access to the federated BIM model, both via browser in the office, iPads in the field, and even offline.”
— Amund Gule, BIM Manager, Skanska
Working in harsh conditions — down to 400 meters below sea level — requires reliable access to project data even without an internet connection. Novorender enables this by making the entire model available on iPads and offline, ensuring that both field and office teams can stay aligned and productive.

Results
By integrating Novorender into their workflow, Skanska has achieved a truly digital and collaborative construction environment. Teams that once relied on static 2D drawings now access a live, federated BIM model in real time — supporting accuracy, communication, and decision-making across all levels of the project.
“I am very happy using Novorender. We previously relied on 2D drawings but no longer need it when everything is available in Novorender on an iPad.”
— Bard Helge Rosesboe, Groundworker, Skanska

The accessibility of the model has reduced potential errors, improved coordination, and allowed hundreds of users across disciplines to actively engage with project data.
“We would have a lot more project errors if we didn’t have so many active users of the federated model – at all levels.”
— Anne Britt Moen, Project Leader, Skanska
Looking ahead, Skanska continues to collaborate closely with Novorender, exploring new integrations — including the upcoming connection with Procore — to further enhance their digital construction capabilities.
